Chapter 8

Scottish Renaissance

The Italian Renaissance began a cultural, political, and artistic rebirth across Europe, including Scotland. Each nation found its own artistic and humanitarian identities in their own histories. Scotland had reason to feel betrayed by the Catholic religion since the pope had refused to recognize them, so even though they were firmly Christian, this was a chance for them to focus on their identity apart from the other island countries. When the Scottish Renaissance began during the 15th century, the Stewarts ruled the kingdom. Although Scotland had been recognized as a nation for more than a century, the Stewarts wanted to re-establish Scottish identity, which had been damaged by the English during the rule of Edward I. As a result, many of the Scottish traditions in architecture, art, education, and music began to change. However, it was politics that was almost entirely overhauled. The Scots developed a new process of taxation, and the Scottish Parliament was first implemented. They created both a standing army and a naval presence. For the first time in Scottish history, they began to define themselves based more on their national identity than their blood relations. This helped to weaken the bonds within the clans.
